The happiest of happy Friday’s to you all and THANK GOD it’s almost the weekend! Can you hear that sound? It’s the noise a heavily pregnant woman makes when she tries to hop around on wooden floor boards and perform a happy dance (it’s not an attractive site, I’ll grant you that).
What have you got planned for Saturday and Sunday? I’m heading off on a long awaited Girls Weekend with two of the lovely girls I first met through Mothers Group and who have become complete and utter superstars in my (and my sons) life. The three of us are VERY excited for two whole mornings where we won’t be woken by toddlers, plenty of delicious food and a sneaky mani/pedi and maybe even a spa! Ahhhhhhhhh.
I’m also ecstatic to be posting up this weeks ‘Mum Who Rocks‘. It’s been a couple of weeks between drinks but trust me, it was worth the wait as I have a stellar group of freaking amazing women all tee’d up for upcoming posts.
We’re kicking off this week with the rather remarkable Fiona Trewhitt, who’s not only mother-in-chief to three little munchkins but also a health coach, positive body image advocate and developer of the hugely popular Mumafit iPhone app (I’m slightly exhausted just thinking about how action packed Fiona’s days must be!)
I first got chatting to Fiona when I was writing an article for a women’s mag about managing your health and happiness with being a mama. The advice she gave was so well thought out and practical that I jumped at the chance to interview her as I feel she epitomises the ‘Mum Who Rocks’ philosophy; that the wheels of life don’t need to stop turning after you become permanently plus 1.
I love the way Fiona has combined her passions and shaped them into a hugely rewarding career that also allows her to prioritise the most important people in her life; her family.
1. Tell us all a little bit about your lovely self.
I am a mother of three kids in four years (yikes!) and am passionate about inspiring women to live healthier, happier lives, particularly during and post pregnancy. I have combined my qualifications in exercise science, life coaching and business to work as a health coach, positive body image advocate and have developed the Mumafit iPhone app designed to holistically assist women be active and healthy during these exciting phases of their lives. I’m also a “wanna-be” hippie, surfer and am constantly striving to be a more chillaxed muma!
2. What words best describe your mummyhood journey thus far?
Chaotic, sweet, learning curve, challenging, heart warming, LOVE.
3. Sweetest parenting experience?
There are so many it’s tough to choose, but this week my 3 year old said to me: “mummy I don’t want to go to jail or heaven” and when I asked him why he replied “because I want to be with YOU!!!!” No idea where he even learnt what jail is, but I found it very sweet.
4. How do you manage being a busy mama with taking care of your own wellness?
Well I’ll be honest and say I don’t always manage this – and when I don’t it’s mentally that I feel it before I feel any physical ill effects. My approach has been to integrate my kids into my health practices so that it’s achievable – so we exercise together often and I involve them in food prep and choice as much as I can. I also have two bookings a week at our gym crèche – and these are gold! I’m definitely lacking in ‘down time’ and my aim as the kids get a little older and we are all getting more sleep is to have more time in silence by myself – aaaah!
5. What are your non-negotiables when it comes to your health/lifestyle?
I must move my body (properly) at least twice a week (more would be nice), drink ample water, eat fresh food for the majority of meals, get as much sleep as I can and spend time outdoors as much as possible. The sun lifts my mood and the kids enjoy the outdoors.
6. What does an average day look like for you?
It looks like a circus juggling act! It’s a mash up of drop offs, housework, packing bags, exercising, prepping food, banging out emails and programs for women worldwide, plays in the park, breaking up toddler fights, music, and lots of feeding and washing up! And mostly getting to bed later than I would like by the time I get it all done.
7. How do you ‘switch off’ at the end of the day/on the weekend?
This has been an ongoing challenge for us since having kids, but as a family we have just nailed it! We have invested in a 1960’s Bedford bus that has been converted into a 6 sleeper camper and we basically head off “glamping” at any opportunity! It’s the only way that we can fully leave work and the ‘busyness’ of city life behind and truly be present with our kids. They LOVE it as much as we do, so it’s such a joy. We hit the road, strip life back to the basics and enjoy loads of fresh air, sun, waves and fun times together.
8. Do you have any favourite websites/blogs that you visit for inspiration/
I honestly wish I had more time to explore the multitude of fabulous blogs etc out there, as there is so much choice right now, but with 3 kids in 4 years and starting my own business, I’ve barely had time! Lately I’ve been stalking Show And Tell Online, The Wellness Warrior and Tara Bliss at Such Different Skies.
9. Now for the REALLY important stuff.
- Cats or dogs? Definitely dogs!
- Dawn or dusk? LOVE dusk
- Yoga or pilates? Pilates right now, but I REALLY want to start regular
- Coffee or tea? I’ve never had a coffee in my life – so tea.
- Juice or smoothies? Juices
10. Favourite food?
Ooh, so many to choose from but I’d have to say it’s a toss up between mango and avocado. Love them both and wish they were cheaper and available all year round in pristine quality!
11. Favourite guilty pleasure?
Date night – we’ve just got back to a regular pattern with this and it makes me realize how much I’ve missed this one on one time. We mostly keep it simple (except when we hit gold class!!!), but it’s divine.
12. The ol’ finish this sentence…
- The best word to describe me is…. friendly
- I totally rock at… snowboarding! Well not rock like Tora Bright, but I do pretty well!
- If I’m not being a mum you can usually find me…on my computer
13. Favourite words/affirmation/quote to live by?
“If it is to be, it is up to me.”
14. Where can we find you?
Online or in the app store! I have to say Instagram is where I do my most regular, best and most open work – I’d love to see you there!
